Ghost Sculptures (2013)

Ghost Sculptures are a series of translucent works that reveal the beauty of natural and social history objects by stripping away their apparent weight, colour and substance, leaving only a luminous form to contemplate and explore. Developed through conversations with Dr Mike Nix and informed by scientific research at a sub-atomic scale, the sculptures were realised during The Superposition’s ASMbly Lab in 2013 by manipulating the refractive index of clear resin using heavy metals. Objects cast in this altered resin were encapsulated within unaltered resin forms, meaning they remain almost invisible until illuminated. This subtle shift in refraction allows objects to appear and disappear under strong light, demonstrating the scientific phenomenon of refraction while encouraging slow looking, touch and curiosity. Displayed together in dimly lit spaces and examined with handheld torches, the works create moments of wonder in which objects seem to emerge purely through light.
